Obesity is a huge problem the world needs to get rid of as soon as possible. We know it’s not the right way to go, but yet there are some who believe in the term, the “healthy obese.” Well, a new study has shown that folks with such a mindset might not be as healthy as they claim.
A new study coming out of Britain claims obese people, no matter how healthy they might feel, are still at a high risk of coming face to face with heart disease. Here’s the thing, the healthy obese are not as problematic when compared to the truly overweight. These people do not suffer from high blood pressure, poor blood sugar, diabetes, and high cholesterol, but that doesn’t mean all is well.
Interestingly enough, it’s been unclear whether or not the healthy obese can contract heart disease due to their weight, and this new study isn’t going to cause for big changes across the board any time soon. Still, it’s a start, if even a minuscule one that will eventually help with ridding the world of obesity.
3 million records analyzed by researchers
To get down to the nitty-gritty of the issue, researchers decided to locate health records of 3.5 million people dating from 1995 to 2015. Researchers looked at folks from age 18 and older who were once free of heart disease.
When compared to normal weight problems with no issues relating to metabolic, the study shows that 50 percent of the healthy obese people in the United Kingdom has a high chance of contracting heart disease than folks with normal weight.
The study goes on to show that 7 percent could one day suffer from a stroke, and are twice at risk of heart failure.
Risk of heart diseases increases with metabolic problems
An obese person with metabolic problems will have a higher risk of heart disease when compared to folks with average weight. For example, if an obese individual has three metabolic abnormalities, they could have three times the risk of coronary heart disease when compared to an average weighted person.
That’s quite a lot to swallow, and something we should all take into consideration before gaining more weight.
“Metabolically healthy obese individuals are at higher risk of coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and heart failure than normal-weight metabolically healthy individuals,” said study author Dr. Rishi Caleyachetty.
