The Android operating system from Google is now the most popular, kicking Windows from the top spot. With that comes many problems, as attackers will likely target the operating system more than Windows. Because of this, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to find out Google removed 41 infected apps from the Play Store.

These apps are malware, and the majority are all about injecting advertisements within an Android smartphone. Google removing these apps is a solid move, but the damage has already been done according to one security expert.

Millions of Android devices may have been affected by malware

Some 36 million devices may have been affected, according to Tel Aviv-based cyber security company Check Point. Apparently, these apps have been a part of the Google Play Store for a number of years, and at the moment, it’s unclear if the malware, dubbed “Judy,” came directly from the South Korean gaming company involved or a third-party.

There’s always the chance for hackers to gain access to the source code and inject malware, or, the company itself could be at fault.

“The malware uses infected devices to generate large amounts of fraudulent clicks on advertisements, generating revenues for the perpetrators behind it,” Checkpoint added.

Android apps infected with malware has become a huge problem for Google and app developers. Google has done quite a lot to get things under control, but as it stands right now, nothing much of what the company did in the past seems to have worked.

It should be said that Google needs to get a hold of the situation because Android is powering over a billion devices owned by real people, and that’s all attackers need to know.

The latest attempt by Google to control its Play Store is a new service called “Play Protect.” The service scans Android devices on a regular basis to ensure proper protection. Time will tell if it works as the company hopes it will, or if malware attackers find a new opening to strike.
