Summer is a few days away and I can already tell that this one is going to be a scorcher. So, while you’re stocking up on sunscreen, oversized shades and wide brimmed hats, there’s two more things you’ll need as well, lots of water, and a smart water bottle!
The summer heat
The lack of urgency by government officials to invest time, effort and money to help tackle climate change, does not take away the fact that it will have adverse effects on our wellbeing. Livescience tells us that there are three key aspects of climate change that can directly affect our health.
The most apparent of the three is changing temperatures, which often causes humidity and frequent heatwaves which can lead to dehydration, heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses. According to weather reports, heatwaves are expected across Eastern and Western Europe, Ireland, United Kingdom and other parts of the world.
Smart water bottles
Thankfully, technology has made it a little easier for us to take proactive steps on our journey to better health. One such way is through the creation of smart water bottles designed to track daily water intake and ensure proper hydration. Here are my top 5 favorites in no particular order:
This can be easily synced with your smartphone, Apple Watch, Amazon Alexa and Fitbit through the H2oPal app. It works through the use of a weight sensor and an accelerometer which monitors the water level inside the bottle.
It then sends this data to the app which analyses the measurements and sends you personalized notifications about how much water you’ve consumed.
You can create a hydration goal that measures your progress overtime to help improve your water intake and develop a healthy habit of consuming more water. This smart water bottle is not rechargeable. It is powered by a coin cell battery (CR2450) which can last up to 6 months before it needs a replacement.
2. Moikit Cuptime2
Although this one looks a little different from the typical smart water bottles, it still gets the job done. Certainly not the most stylish in the bunch, but due to its eco-friendly and BPA free plastic material I can overlook the lack of flair. Known as the intelligent water bottle, it is compatible with Jawbone, Apple Health Kitand Fitbit, and is rechargeable.
One of my favorite features is that it has a temperature sensor that warns you if the water is too hot to consume, and then sends you a reminder when the water is at the perfect temperature.

3. Hydra Smartbottle
This one certainly takes the ‘smart bottle movement’ up a notch. Not only do you get a BPA free bottle that can hold up to 600ml of water, you also get some entertainment and convenience in the mix. This is perfect for those who are active — whether it’s daily bike rides or jogging through the park — thanks to the unexpected inclusion of a Bluetooth speaker, along with FM radio and speakerphone for phonecalls.
It has a flashing LED light and a clip-on option for easy carrying, but the best feature of all in my opinion is the built-in power bank, which allows you to easily charge your smartphone. The associated app is compatible with iOS and Android.
This one is different from the others because it allows you to turn any container into a smart bottle. Through its innovative cap technology you can simply purchase a bottle of water, add the Water.IO cap and viola you now have a smart bottle which is connected through and app. Much like the others, it tracks your water intake and alerts you when its time to drink more water though vibration, lights or sounds- you choose.
5. Hidrate Spark 2.0
It’s easy to see why this smart water bottle was featured on websites such as Forbes, Glamour, Mashable and Buzzfeed. To say this bottle is visually appealing would be an understatement; available in an array of beautiful colors such as teal, green, purple and black it even glows to remind you that you should stay hydrated.
The bottle has a sensor inside that records how many ounces or millilitres of water you’ve consumed and sends you notifications about your progress.
It connects via Bluetooth and can be synced with Apple Watch Fit, Google Fit, Jawbone Up, Under Armour and Fitbit. Best of all the company has partnered with The National Kidney Foundation, so 10 percent of the proceeds from this limited-edition, Hidrate Spark 2.0 bottle goes towards the organization.
