Jay Z is a great example of a highly successful influencer in the music industry. He went from a rapper to full-on entrepreneur with his own exclusive music streaming service and downloadable app.
Right Place, Right Time
He’s an excellent example of a hungry individual who was at the right place at the right time, with the right business strategy and opportunities. He was able to set himself apart from the competition by instilling value in his product.
Losing Taylor Swift
Thanks to other celebrity influencers such as Taylor Swift, he was able to bank on exclusivity by making his music streaming service a available on a platform that exclusively hosted the music of popular artists as an alternative streaming service to competitors such as Spotify.
Sprint Wants a Piece
He built a valuable service that ended up catching the eye of major corporations such as Sprint. Sprint purchased shares of his streaming service back in January. For $200 million dollars, Sprint acquired a 33 percent stake Tidal’s shares along with other artists who remain part owners of the streaming service. Sprint’s CEO, Marcelo Claure consequently joined their board of directors making the service available for subscribers of their service.
Sprint subscribers now gain access to over 500 exclusive playlists from artists, celebrities, and athletes.Tidal now hosts 48.5 million tracks. Sprint subscribers get free access to this exclusive streaming services for up to 6 months which thereafter they are converted to a subscription that costs $9.99 per month.
“4:44”: The Long Awaited Album
Jay Z has made some brilliant business moves and consequently is now a very valuable asset to the music industry as well as other artists and his various business partners. He is currently the talk of the internet, releasing a long-awaited album titled “4:44” on June 30th, 2017. Previews, courtesy of Sprint, are available to view and listen to here.
After losing a bit of T-Swifty’s exclusivity it seems as though this would be a logical business move for him to release an album of his own making it exclusively available through his own streaming service. Doing so would help him to recoup subscribers who might go elsewhere now in search of a less expensive streaming option.
Sneak Preview of “4:44”
Interestingly enough judging from the clips currently available, courtesy of Sprint, it appears he is tapping into currently popular styles commonly seen in underground hip-hop. From what we’ve seen so far his new album appears to be a bit on the dark side consistent with messages common to his early work detailing his tumultuous upbringing.
We like his use of samples thus far and we look forward to hearing your opinion on this new album when it drops today. Be on the lookout for more info on this celebrity influencer. His success and intellectual business moves are definitely something to take note of. For aspiring artists, it’s always smart to pay attention to what’s going on in the industry and take note of how various influencers are using technology to their advantage.
