While we were all looking forward to Friday, one of Elon Musk’s companies was busy launching a satellite into orbit.

The Formosat-5 satellite lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base at 11:51 a.m. Pacific Time on top of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. After lift off, the team landed the rocket’s first stage on a drone ship near the base in the Pacific Ocean. The second stage continued on toward orbit and deployed the satellite.

The satellite is the first to be fully designed by Taiwan’s space program. Its purpose is to advance the nation’s space technology while also providing both scientific research and global imagery with a wide array of uses.
